For a truly unique safari experience, the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park offers the rare opportunity to witness lions lounging high within the branches of ancient fig and acacia trees. Unlike typical prides that stay on the ground, these lions have adapted to the heat and insects by climbing upward, creating a surreal visual of heavy predators balanced perfectly on horizontal limbs. Visitors can expect a tranquil, remote atmosphere as they traverse the savanna in a 4x4 vehicle, scanning the canopy during the warmest parts of the day. Beyond the famous lions, the landscape is home to massive herds of buffalo, elegant topi antelopes, and elephants wandering near the Ishasha River. Because this area is less crowded than the northern plains, the experience feels intimate and wild, offering a raw connection to one of natureβs most unusual behavioral displays.

Unlike the typical ground-dwelling prides seen elsewhere in Africa, these "kings of the jungle" appear almost like surreal decorations draped over the canopy. You may encounter an entire pride up to 16 individuals balancing their 400-pound bodies on a single set of limbs, tails dangling and eyes surveying the plain
While the lions are the headline attraction, the Ishasha sector is a biodiversity hotspot where you can expect to see
