Chimpanzee Tracking

Kibale National Park, Uganda

Quick Overview

Track our closest relatives in their natural habitat.

Detailed Overview

Chimpanzee tracking in Kibale National Park is widely regarded as the premier primate experience in East Africa, boasting a 95% success rate for sightings. Known as the "Primate Capital of the World," this lush rainforest is home to over 1,500 chimpanzees, our closest living relatives. Led by expert rangers from the Kanyanchu Visitor Centre, daily treks depart at 8:00 AM and 2:00 PM, taking participants through diverse terrain to locate habituated chimpanzee communities. Once found, visitors are granted one hour of direct observation to witness the chimps’ complex social dynamics, including grooming, feeding, and their iconic "pant-hoot" vocalizations. To ensure a sustainable and intimate encounter, group sizes are limited to six people, and participants must be at least 15 years old. With permits priced at $250 (for 2024–2026), this activity offers a rare window into the lives of these endangered Great Apes while directly contributing to the vital conservation efforts of the Uganda Wildlife Authority.

What to Expect

What to Expect During Chimpanzee Trekking in Uganda

Chimpanzee trekking in Uganda is an exciting, immersive jungle experience that brings you face-to-face with our closest relatives in the wild. Set in lush tropical forests like Kibale Forest National Park, this adventure combines nature, wildlife, and raw exploration in one unforgettable activity.

Your journey begins early in the morning with a briefing from experienced park rangers, who guide you on safety, chimp behavior, and trekking rules. Afterward, you head into the forest in small groups, following fresh tracks, calls, and signs left by the chimpanzees.

As you trek through dense vegetation, expect to encounter rich biodiversity—colorful birds, butterflies, monkeys, and towering trees making the walk itself a scenic highlight. The trek can take anywhere from 2 to 5 hours, depending on the location of the chimpanzees, adding a sense of adventure and anticipation.

Then comes the magical moment you hear loud hoots and calls echoing through the forest. Suddenly, you find them. Wild chimpanzees swinging through trees, grooming each other, playing, and communicating in their natural habitat. You will spend one full hour observing them up close, watching their human-like behaviors, expressions, and social interactions.

Unlike gorillas, chimpanzees are highly active and energetic, constantly moving, climbing, and making noise offering a dynamic and engaging wildlife encounter. It’s not just a sighting; it’s a live, emotional connection with nature.

Expect muddy trails, occasional steep sections, and a true off-the-beaten-path experience—so a moderate level of fitness is recommended. But every step is worth it.
