6-Day Gorilla Trekking & Game Drive Safari

Lake Mburo NP, Bwindi impenartable Forest Np, Queen Elizabeth Np

Tour Overview

A 6-day safari combining Uganda's most iconic wildlife experience gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park with savannah game viewing in Lake Mburo and Queen Elizabeth National Park, including a Kazinga Channel boat cruise. Designed to give travelers a complete primate-and-wildlife experience without an overly long itinerary.

Day by Day Itinerary

Depart Kampala in the morning and drive southwest (around 4 hours) to Lake Mburo National Park. Check into your lodge around midday, then head out for an afternoon game drive. Lake Mburo is one of the few parks in Uganda where zebra, eland, and impala are easily spotted, alongside buffalo, warthog, and a wide range of antelope species, set against a backdrop of acacia woodland and wetlands.
Meals: Lunch, Dinner
An early morning game drive in Lake Mburo before breakfast offers a final chance to spot hippos and water birds around the lakeshore. After breakfast, depart for Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, roughly a 5–6-hour drive through the Kigezi highlands, often called the "Switzerland of Africa" for its terraced hills and steep, cultivated valleys.
Arrive in the late afternoon and check into your lodge, with time to rest ahead of the next morning's gorilla trek.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
After an early breakfast, report to the park headquarters (Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, or Nkuringo sector, depending on which gorilla family you're assigned) by 7:30 AM for a briefing on trekking etiquette and safety.
Bwindi is home to roughly half of the world's remaining mountain gorilla population, spread across more than a dozen habituated families. Trekking time varies significantly anywhere from 1 to 6+ hours of hiking through dense, often steep and muddy forest depending on where the assigned family was last located. Porters can be hired locally to carry packs and assist on the steeper sections, which is worth budgeting for given the terrain.
Once the family is located, visitors are permitted one hour of observation time, watching gorillas feed, play, and move through the forest at close range under the supervision of armed rangers and trackers. Return to the lodge in the afternoon for a well-earned rest.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
After breakfast, depart Bwindi and drive north toward Queen Elizabeth National Park, commonly via the Ishasha route (around 4–5 hours). If timing allows, pass through the Ishasha sector, known for its tree-climbing lions that rest in the branches of large fig trees during the day a rare behavior seen in very few places in Africa.
Continue to the main Queen Elizabeth Park area and check into your lodge in the late afternoon.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Set out early for a game drive across the Kasenyi plains, Queen Elizabeth's main game-viewing circuit, known for lions, elephants, buffalo, Ugandan kob, hyena, and leopard sightings. Return to the lodge for lunch.
In the afternoon, take a boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel, the narrow waterway connecting Lake Edward and Lake George. The channel holds one of Africa's highest concentrations of hippos, along with buffalo, elephants, crocodiles, and a wide variety of waterbirds gathering along its banks a relaxed but rewarding way to close out the wildlife viewing.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
After breakfast, begin the return drive to Kampala/Entebbe, typically via Mbarara, taking approximately 6–7 hours. A stop is usually made along the way for lunch and to stretch your legs, often at Igongo Cultural Centre near Mbarara.
Arrive back in Entebbe in time for an evening flight, or transfer to your Kampala accommodation if extending your stay.
