7-Day Uganda Budget Safari

Lake Mburo, Queen Elizabeth, Murchison falls, Ziwa sanctaury

Tour Overview

A 7-day overland safari covering three of Uganda's best savannah parks for game viewing Lake Mburo, Queen Elizabeth National Park, and Murchison Falls National Park — with rhino tracking at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary on the return leg. Built around budget lodges/campsites, shared 4x4 safari vehicles, and full-board meals, while still covering Uganda's classic wildlife circuit.

Day by Day Itinerary

Depart Kampala in the morning and drive southwest (around 4 hours) to Lake Mburo National Park, Uganda's smallest savannah park but one of its most underrated. Check into your budget lodge/campsite around midday, then head out for an afternoon game drive. Lake Mburo is one of the few parks where zebra, eland, and impala are easily found, alongside buffalo, warthog, and numerous antelope species, set against acacia woodland and wetlands.
Meals: Lunch, Dinner
Early morning game drive in Lake Mburo before breakfast, with a chance to spot hippos and water birds around the lake itself. After breakfast, depart for Queen Elizabeth National Park, roughly a 4–5-hour drive, with a lunch stop at Igongo Cultural Centre near Mbarara along the way.
Arrive in the afternoon and settle into your lodge/campsite, with time to relax before dinner.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Set out early for a game drive across the Kasenyi plains, the park's main game-viewing circuit, known for lions, elephants, buffalo, Ugandan kob, hyena, and leopard sightings. Return to the lodge for lunch.
In the afternoon, take a boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel, the narrow waterway connecting Lake Edward and Lake George. The channel holds one of Africa's highest concentrations of hippos, along with buffalo, elephants, crocodiles, and a wide variety of waterbirds gathering along its banks.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Drive south to the Ishasha sector, roughly 2 hours from the main park area, famous for its tree-climbing lions a rare behavior where lions rest in the branches of large fig trees during the day. A full morning and early afternoon game drive through Ishasha also turns up topi, buffalo, and elephants, with the Ishasha River marking the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Return to the main park area in the late afternoon for dinner and an overnight stay.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Depart after breakfast for the long drive north to Murchison Falls National Park (approximately 6–7 hours, via Fort Portal and Hoima), Uganda's largest national park, named after the dramatic point where the Nile River forces itself through a narrow 7-meter gorge before plunging 43 meters below. Arrive in the late afternoon and check into your lodge/campsite, with time to settle in before dinner.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Set out early for a game drive across the northern savannah of Murchison Falls, home to large herds of elephants, giraffes, buffalo, and Uganda's largest population of lions, along with regular leopard and hyena sightings.
In the afternoon, take a boat cruise on the Nile to the base of Murchison Falls, passing pods of hippos, basking crocodiles, and a dense concentration of waterbirds, including the rare shoebill stork in the right season. The cruise ends close enough to the falls to feel their spray and hear the roar of the Nile being forced through the gorge
Meals: breakfast, lunch and Dinner
Depart after breakfast and head south toward Kampala, stopping en route at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, Uganda's only sanctuary for white rhinos, reintroduced after the species was hunted to extinction in the country during the political instability of the 1980s. Join a short guided rhino tracking walk on foot to view rhinos at close range one of the few places in East Africa where this is possible.
Continue the drive to Kampala/Entebbe, arriving in the evening in time for a flight home or onward travel.
Meals: breakfast, lunch and Dinner (if the flight is late)
